With all of the events I've had the pleasure of being a part of for over a decade...I have so many experiences to share with you! While here, you may find inspiration for your wedding day, corporate function or the things I like to get into when I'm not planning like a BOSS!
I’ve planned weddings for over 12 years, and there’s so much knowledge I want to share with my brides. Writing about it allows me to reach as many brides as possible, helping them avoid common pitfalls. Today, I want to discuss 10 reasons you might find yourself over budget on your wedding.
1. Sticker Shock
Sticker shock is a common experience for newly engaged couples. While you may have heard horror stories about overspending, nothing prepares you for the reality of vendor pricing. That centerpiece you found on Instagram could cost 3-4 times what you expected, and the photographer you love might be double the price you had in mind. This sudden realization can make you think you’ll never be able to afford your dream wedding. But fear not—by following my advice, you can avoid being over budget on your wedding.
2. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Whether it’s an aunt, godparent, or a member of your wedding party, don’t hesitate to accept help. If a loved one asks what you want for your wedding, tell them your needs rather than focusing on gifts for your new home. Consider creating a group fund where your wedding party can contribute to specific needs, like a cake, instead of traditional gifts. This not only relieves some financial pressure but also helps keep you from going over budget on your wedding.
3. Pay Unapologetically for What You Want
Some brides believe that a classy wedding means everything must be expensive. However, you can stick to your budget by paying only for the vendors that truly matter to you, such as the dress, music, or venue. For example, if you’re not a big dessert fan, consider a cookie bar with a small cake for cutting. This creative choice could save you up to $1,000.
4. Customize Offerings with Your Vendors
If you love a vendor but their packages don’t fit your budget, don’t hesitate to negotiate. Perhaps you don’t need videography, which is included in their package. Ask if they can provide a custom offering that excludes services you don’t want, potentially lowering the overall cost and keeping you from going over budget on your wedding.
5. Pay Less for Accessories
You don’t need the most expensive name-brand shoes or accessories. Look for items that have sentimental value or are more economical. A top-of-the-line pair of shoes and accessories can add up to over $2,000, while more affordable options could cost under $300. Be mindful of these smaller expenses that can accumulate quickly.
6. Shorten Your Reception
While it’s lovely to envision guests partying all night, reality is often different. Guests may be tired after traveling or a long day of preparation. Instead of a 4-hour reception, consider a 3-hour one. This not only reduces bar costs but also acknowledges that guests will start heading home after a while. You can also delay the bar opening by 15 minutes into cocktail hour to save on costs.
These tips might challenge your previous ideas about budgeting for your wedding, but it’s entirely possible to save money while still creating your dream day. If you need help navigating these recommendations or crafting a budget that works for you, I’m here to assist.
